Do these five things
- Stay calm and do not resist
- Say clearly: “I want to speak to a lawyer”
- Give your name and basic details only
- Ask a family member to call your attorney
- Remember the officers’ names and the time of each step
Never do this
Never try to explain your side to the police without a lawyer. Officers are allowed to use anything you say, and friendly conversations are often where cases are made.
Asking for a lawyer is not an admission of anything. It is your right.
This article is general information, not legal advice for your situation. Laws differ from place to place: talk to an attorney before you act on it.
